Kanye West "Power" Cheat Sheet
If you did not understand what was going on in the vid check the cheat sheet from MTV.
"Dragonlance: An image of a sword descending into a crown hovers over Kanye's head, bringing to mind Volume Two of Douglas Niles' series "The Crown and the Sword: The Rise of Solamnia," in which Sir Jaymes Markham commands the orders of the Rose, Sword and Crown.
M.C. Escher's "Waterfall": The Dutch artist famous for making eye-popping images in which gravity and space were twisted into pretzels sketched an image in 1961 in which the water at the base of a waterfall appears to be flowing uphill against gravity before reaching the top of the fall, much as the water pours towards the sky out of two urns held by maidens in the Kanye clip.
Chiaroscuro: The monochromatic clip plays with this Renaissance style of painting, in which the artist used sharp contrasts between light and dark to highlight the drama on the canvas. Often, unseen sources of light would illuminate the subjects; in the clip, Kanye appears to have an inner glow that manifests in his eyes and the sword and crown above him cast a light on the entire scene.
Jean-Leon Gerome: The French painter known for his love of historical painting with Greek mythological themes created an image entitled "Head of a Woman with the Horns of a Ram," which is not unlike the albino-like female figures sprouting long, pointy horns who frame 'Ye.
"House of Flying Daggers": Though he's transposed the action from China to ancient Greece, Brambilla might be paying homage to the 2004 action-romance "House of Flying Daggers" with the scene at the end of the video, in which two combatants are flying through the air in mid-sword fight as white bursts of light fill the screen.
Ed Moses' "HOLA": This features a haunting single eye glowing behind a swirl of heavy brush marks that some have compared to the mask of a superhero. In "Power," Kanye's eyes have an eerie glow as he stares unblinkingly, also not unlike actor Idris Elba's Heimdall in the upcoming movie "Thor."
Michelangelo: From the rows of Ionic columns surrounding him to the floating parade of gauzy-shift wearing Greek men and women who drift into the frame, Brambilla is clearly taking some inspiration from the classic frescoes painted by Italian Renaissance painter and architect Michelangelo.
Q-Tip: The legendary rapper and member of A Tribe Called Quest released an album called The Renaissance in 2008. He said the reference to that period was more than just an album title and a sign of his unwavering commitment to keeping his art pure.
Ancient Egypt: Yeezy once again rocks the unbelievably fat chain he wore at the BET Awards earlier this year. Its giant pendant is an image of Horus — the Egyptian god of the sky, war and protection" - MTV

Kanye West x Marco Brambilla Director of "Power"

So what exactly is the piece?
Well, it's a video portrait of Kanye. It starts with a very tight shot introducing him that's kind of a reinvention of a neoclassical painting. It pulls back from the shot, without any cuts, and we reveal the video canvas, populated by all these characters who are depicted in various stages of undress and decadence. The iconography comes from Roman iconography, Renaissance iconography, and it connects to the sexuality of the music as well. As we reveal the setting for it, there's a feeling of a moment of transition for him. A fall from grace, if you will. It visualizes power, and him as the icon as power, and then at the end of the piece it challenges the power that I set up at the beginning. It's an elliptical piece of storytelling.
How did you guys end up using that kind of imagery?
He approached me via my gallery and he wanted to do something that wasn't a music video. He wanted a video work that would accompany the music. I said, "That's great, because I don't do music videos." I wanted to give it an epic feeling. The song feels very personal, but the orchestration and the production of the track is epic and I wanted to give it something hypersensational and exaggerated.
Kanye had laid low after the Taylor Swift incident, and I think people expected him to come back a bit humbled. Were you surprised that he wanted to do something this over-the-top?
That's exactly what I like about his music. It's the anti–Tiger Woods moment, you know? This piece is really about that. The new album is very personal, too, and the various tracks on the album suggest things that have happened to him. This is the most epic track. It was a really great opportunity to show a moment of defiance and a moment of self-awareness. It's that combination that he has as an artist that's very peculiar.
When did the actual production take place?
We started about a month ago on the photography. It took quite a long time in postproduction to put together. All the multi-layered imagery was very complicated. We used everything from 3-D graphics programs to this thing called "The Flame" that's used for feature films. It's basically a compassing tool; it's very much like how Photoshop works for stills. In fact, I put the images together in Photoshop first and we translated that to motion footage. We used every conceivable leading-edge tool that's at an artists' disposal.
How much input did Kanye have?
In preproduction, we had a lot of brainstorming sessions. Once we started production it became about how to execute it, so it was mostly in my studio and working with my postproduction people.
So what's Kanye like in real life?
He has a charisma to him which is really compelling. Creatively, he really wants to take chances. He let me go as far as I wanted to go. It wasn't like working with a music act or a video commissioned from a record label. He really thinks like an artist: The conversations were based on visual references, music references, and very little to do with the business side, the marketing side. As a musician, he expresses himself as an artist.
Have you been following his Twitter?
I heard he just started, recently. I heard it's really gotten an amazing following. What's it like?
He tweets about Persian rugs with cherub imagery and stuff like that.
Oh yeah, he told me about that one. That's very much how he is. He has a very kind of hyperactive thirst for things.
The piece is premiering tonight after Jersey Shore. Any thoughts on the association between the two?
I didn't know what Jersey Shore was until they told me. I guess whatever gets people to look at it. It's not like a gallery show; once I made it, I don't have control.
You've said you're expecting a bit of controversy from the piece. Are you gearing yourself up to defend it?
Look, I think it's a very honest piece. It's definitely larger-than-life and it's definitely a strong kind of statement, and it ties into his persona and it ties into his reputation and everything else that will be commented on will be commented on through the filter of how people perceive his persona ... he's brash, and uncensored, but it has a self-awareness. And it's not just constructed. A lot of very popular mainstream artists are products of record companies and marketing companies, and any time anyone can stand outside of that, that's interesting. He's one of the few people left that's making work that he believes in.
Do you have anything else planned with Kanye?
We're talking about it. We're talking about doing more projects.
And I understand you've heard that Dark Twisted Fantasy is the name of the album?
I've heard that's the latest name. I would say not locked-in, and it would probably not get locked until closer to the time of the album release.

Finally, Check some of the details about the video, namely the length.
"There's a lyric in the song — 'No one man should have this much power' — so the video kind of answers its own question," Brambilla said. "It poses the question: 'What does power and access look like?' And then: 'How delicate is it to preserve that moment of time?' "
Brambilla said they wanted to take a contemporary look at the idea of someone being immortal then becoming mortal, and show it in a way that would connect to art history. He used the Sistine Chapel as a reference point, including a Michelangelo fresco that comes to life. West is the central figure of the piece and represents "power." Brambilla said West has gone through a tumultuous past year, as expressed in the lyrics of "Power," and is in a moment of transition.
"I shot images of the casting, people who came in as dancers and models and actresses in the various poses, and then it was put together as a photograph originally," Brambilla said. "We had very little time to shoot it. We only had a day to shoot, it so I basically know exactly how each element would look, where each element would go and how the whole piece would choreograph, because there's about 24 layers of video in the piece, and they are all interconnected. So it's almost like a visual ballet in a way, and it had to be pre-planned in a very specific way to make it cohesive and to make it work. That was the most challenging part of it: how to [translate] it from a still, a painting, and then make the painting come alive into the filming and the photography."
Amazingly enough, Brambilla was able to accomplish this in a minute and a half. The "Power" clip might only be 90 seconds, but Brambilla said that wasn't the plan going in."I made it very clear at the beginning that I wasn't really interested if it was going to be a music video," he said. "I wanted to do something which was more like a visual accompaniment to the track, and so it didn't really need to be any specific length and it didn't really need to be the whole song. It needed to kind of introduce the song in a different way and a fresh way, and I came with this continuous shot with no cuts, no lip sync, and the minute, minute and a half just ... seemed like the perfect amount of time to show a video portrait.
"It didn't answer all the questions," he added. "It just becomes more provocative and a little bit more tense at the end, because it cuts away just before the action within it resolves itself, so it kind of leaves you with the feeling that something's about to happen."
Kanye West "Power" Live at Singfest 2010
Mr. West lets the "Power" go live in Singapore at the Singfest. Clip 2 is called "The Rebirth: I am a New Man" Freestyle, which could be "Pinocchio Story 2".
